Juist, hoewel ik heus mijn fair share van de culinaire wereld af weet, wist ik nog niet echt waar ik ja op had gezegd. Pierre Gagnaire heeft in vier uur al mijn eerdere restaurantervaringen te niet gedaan. Want eten bij Pierre Gagnaire, dat is met niks te vergelijken.
Dat begon al met de geweldige ontvangst, het glas Champagne dat nog net even lekkerder smaakte, de menukaart waar geen prijzen op stonden (omdat vrouwen die nou eenmaal niet horen te zien.. of zoiets totaal onfeministisch, maar dat maakte vanavond echt niet uit..) We hadden nog geen gerecht besteld, of onze tafel stond al vol met amuses.
Het hele restaurant stil, maar toch vol, met nette dames en heren, minstens twintig jaar ouder dan wij. Zat ik weer met mijn camera. Durfde niet te flitsen, want he, ik vestigde op deze manier al genoeg aandacht op onze tafel, maar ik had aan het eind van de avond toch mooi meer dan 100 foto’s gemaakt.
Ik koos de Langoustine, met krab. Alleen een hoofdgerechtje, want ook al had ik geen kaart met prijzen, ik kon ze vanaf de kaart van m’n vriend zo ongeveer wel ruiken. En daar komt bij, ook al bestelde ik maar een gerecht, er werden er vijf geserveerd (de twintig miljoen amuses niet eens meegerekend). Het was fabuleus.
Uiteindelijk toch maar een dessert besteld, want het klonk zo heerlijk en we konden er een delen zonder dat ze daar ook maar een heel klein beetje gek van op keken. De chocolade soufle, geserveerd met een creme van chocolade en pistache, vijf bonbons en een chocolade petit fours. En ja, dat was inderdaad een half dessert.
Het aller leukste was nog wel het feit dat we de keuken in mochten! De ober vroeg aan ons”willen jullie soms de keuken bekijken en foto’s maken” Uh Jaaa! Heel indrukwekkend om te zien. Op zo’n kleine (hete) oppervlakte, zoveel mensen hard aan het werk! Na de keuken nog een uur in de wijn’cave’ gesnuffeld met de sommelier, maakte het helemaal speciaal.
En nu wil ik nooit meer minder eten dan Pierre Gagnaire… (Grapje natuurlijk! Op de terugweg van Parijs maakten we gewoon weer een stopje bij de MacDrive, don’t worry, heb nog geen last van culinaire sterallures!)
