Als zestienjarige op het gala met Kim!
Op de middelbare school veranderde ik in de eerste twee jaar van een stil meisje, in een meisje met veel vriendinnen. We hadden een hele gezellige groep met meiden en hoewel ik een van de enige was die nog niet mee uit mocht, voelde ik me toch niet echt buitengesloten. Ik was een laatbloeier wat vriendjes betreft, in de vierde merkte ik voor het eerst dat sommige jongens wel ‘interesse’ in me hadden en dan kreeg je van die leuke sms-relaties, die verder natuurlijk nergens op uitliepen, natuurlijk. Een paar weken voor m’n zestiende verjaardag zoende ik voor het eerst, met een jongen die al negentien was, dus dat was super spannend, haha. Dat was ook gelijk m’n eerste vriendje.
Was je op de middelbare school populair?
Ik was absoluut niet populair, maar ik hoorde er, zeker de laatste jaren, wel helemaal bij. Bij ons waren gelukkig geen Mean Girls taferelen, of in ieder geval, daar heb ik niks van gemerkt. Ik was ook zeker geen Mean Girl, heb nooit gepest. Natuurlijk was ik geen heilige en roddelde ik ook wel eens, maar ik heb nooit iemand opzettelijk pijn gedaan.
Ben je ooit blijven zitten?
Nee gelukkig niet, dat was altijd wel een grote angst. Op de basisschool niet hoor, maar op de middelbare school heb ik jaren gehad waarin het niet helemaal vlekkeloos verliep. In de derde bijvoorbeeld, toen was ik echt een puber! Zat ik te leren met m’n boek op m’n schoot, benen op bed, ene oog op m’n computer, andere oog op de TV gericht. Uh ja, dat werkt niet he!
Hoe was jij op zestienjarige leeftijd?
Ik mocht pas uit toen ik zestien was, dus m’n zestiende verjaardag was heel speciaal (inclusief in de sloot fiets incident, snel vergeten!). Toen ik zestien was had ik een vriendje, en daar was ik heel serieus in, maar dat ging na een half jaartje over en na twee maandjes verdrietig veranderde ik in een klein feestbeestje, maar wel eentje die geen gekke dingen uitspookte (zoenen voor een avondje, daar deed ik dus niet aan, en in de sloot ben ik ook niet meer gefietst..). Ik denk dat ik de laatste paar maanden van m’n zestiende en de eerste paar van m’n zeventiende echt het allergelukkigst was. Alles leek gewoon vanzelf te gaan en ik dacht niet aan vroeger of later.
Hoe was jouw eerste date?
Mijn eerste date was dus iets voor m’n zestiende verjaardag, met een drie jaar oudere jongen, uit de zesde, dus super stoer en spannend. Het was een dubbeldate, maar dat was geen succes want ik kende dat andere meisje niet en ik was toen nog lang niet zo zelfverzekerd als nu, dus ik was vet zenuwachtig en durfde amper iets te zeggen. We gingen naar de film ‘The Skeleton Key’ en het was zo verschrikkelijk eng, niet mijn ding! Aan het eind van de avond gingen we natuurlijk zoenen, m’n allereerste zoen. Heel romantisch op de parkeerplaats bij de bioscoop in Rotterdam, langs de maas. Volgens mij had ik mijn ogen wagenwijd open, maar dat durf ik niet met 100% zekerheid te zeggen. Zo genoeg, teenage humiliation, haha!
Wat was je favoriete vak op school?
Geschiedenis! Ik vond al die verhalen over vroegere tijden altijd heel interessant en m’n leraar maakte het ook altijd wel interessant. De laatste twee jaar vond ik engels ook heel erg leuk, omdat die taal me echt is gaan fascineren, oh en omdat we altijd super goede boeken mochten lezen en ik leek de enige die dat vrijwillig deed, haha (en ik haalde ook vaak negens voor engels essays, omdat ik er zo verschrikkelijk goed m’n best op deed, omdat ik het leuk vond, en negens haalde ik niet zo vaak!)
Was je op de middelbare school ook al zo fashionable?
Ik las altijd wel de Ellegirl, de Elle, Vogue, Teenvogue, maar ik zag er niet als een modepopje uit. Ik besteedde m’n geld liever aan make-up, gadgets en uitgaan. Accessoires heb ik wel altijd heel belangrijk gevonden, die had ik al-tijd van Guess! Ik was fan van Miss Sixty, al m’n broeken waren van Miss Sixty, en ik heb ook een hele Tommy Hilfiger periode gehad, maar m’n kledingkast hing zeker niet zo vol als nu het geval is. Ik wilde er gewoon altijd leuk uit zien, maar vond het niet zo belangrijk om er volgens de laatste trends bij te lopen.

Die wordt ook gepest. Zelf wordt ik niet gepest, maar als ik iets vekeerds doe in hun ogen, dan is het fout. Dus raap ik alle moed bij elkaar en leg ik rustig uit dat ik het niet leuk vindt hoe ze doen op dat moment. Dat helpt!
Het enige waar ik mee op moet leren gaan is dat als mensen een beperking hebben, zoals ik, direct zielig gevonden worden. En dan doen vooral de 'populaire' kinderen in de klas. MAAR, als je ze persoonlijk spreekt, doen ze opeens verdacht aardig tegen je….
