Woensdag, deden we op verzoek van mij, iets spannends. We vonden dat we toch ook wel iets moesten zien van het eiland behalve het zwembad en omdat ik taxi’s maar stom en duur vind en je op de bus op Zakynthos blijkbaar niet hoefde te rekenen, dacht ik.. Waarom huren we geen fiets? Het was zo’n prachtig en vooral sportief idee, het bleek uiteindelijk geen masterplan, hoewel we er ’s avonds toch ook wel weer heel erg om konden lachen..
Kijk het is dus op Zakynthos wat heuvelachtig en Ashley had in eerste instantie haar fiets nog niet zo door. De eerste vijf minuten prevelde ze nog hoe fantastisch het wel niet was en dat het zo’n goed idee was van mij. Toen kwam de eerste berg en kreeg ze haar versnelling niet naar beneden. Vijf minuten later lag ze bovenaan de berg buitenadem en leek het alsof ze bijna buitenbewustzijn zou gaan raken. Oeps.
Maar dankzij heel erg veel bordjes Zakynthos stad kwamen we toch al na een uur in de hoofdstad van het eiland aan.. Thank God voor het dichte wolkendek wat continu boven ons hing, in de brandende zon hadden we het waarschijnlijk niet gered.
De stad was druk, maar mooi! Wat een kleuren! Ik kon op iedere straathoek wel een foto maken. Dat deed ik dan ook. En Ashley ook.
Na twee uurtjes slenteren vonden we het genoeg geweest en streken we neer op een verlaten strandje. Ashley was zo enthousiast dat ze een spontane duik in het water nam. Ik vond het een mooi moment om lekker te blijven zitten waar ik zat, met m’n camera in m’n hand natuurlijk.
Lunchen deden we met heel veel broodjes met roomboter en een tonijnsalade die zelfs IK niet op kon. Nou en dat zegt dus echt wel wat. Lekker was ‘ie gelukkig ook. Na de lunch slenterden we nog wat verder, zaten we op bankjes om naar bootjes te kijken, of zaten we in de schaduw om een goed boek te lezen (Ashley) of om hysterisch veel foto’s te maken en ijsjes te halen (Annemerel)
Er kwam toch helaas ook een moment dat we weer terug moesten. Zoals je al aan Ashley’s hoofd kunt zien, daar hadden we niet heel erg veel zin in. Ik gaf Ashley nog even een appel, nam zelf nog een banaan en vond het toen echt tijd om te gaan.
Ik voorop als de wegwijs Piet. Goed, daar gaat het natuurlijk al fout. Zoals mijn zusje al zei bij het horen van het verhaal ‘Annemerel jij kunt zelfs hopeloos in Amsterdam verdwalen en dat ik dan uiteindelijk de weg moet vinden’. Juist.
Ik denk dat we ergens een afslag gemist hebben, want op een gegeven moment zaten we in de bergen en dat was niet de bedoeling. En zagen we op de heenweg overal bordjes met ‘Zakynthos stad’ dat kleine gehucht waar wij vandaan kwamen was natuurlijk op geen enkel bordje te bekennen. Uiteindelijk zijn we na 2,5(!) uur dan toch uiteindelijk thuis gekomen. 1,5 uur langer dan op de heenweg. Tsja, wat zullen we daar nu eens op zeggen?
Na die fietstocht hadden we dus ook wel wat verdiend, althans dat vonden wij. En wat dan? Nou een Mojito aan het zwembad. Veel te sterk voor ons natuurlijk, dus hadden we drie zakjes extra suiker nodig. In het vervolg bestellen we ‘baby mojito’s with extra sugar & less rum’
En toen was het weer tijd voor heel veel CARBS in de vorm van Pasta! Hmmmmm….. I could get used to this :-)
